Åland University of Applied Sciences (Högskolan på Åland - HÅ), located in Mariehamn in the autonomous, Swedish-speaking Åland archipelago of Finland, is an internationally recognized higher education institution renowned for its maritime academy, engineering innovation, health caring sciences, and business administration. Tracing its historical roots back to 1866 with the establishment of the prestigious Mariehamn Navigation School (Navigationsskolan i Mariehamn), the modern university was established by the Government of Åland (Ålands landskapsregering) in 2003 through the consolidation of maritime, nursing, commercial, and technical colleges. Serving approximately 600 degree students with small interactive class sizes and an intimate, community-driven educational culture, Högskolan på Åland operates across modern specialized facilities including Campus Norra (Neptunigatan 17), the historic Campus Södra overlooking Mariehamn’s western harbour, and the state-of-the-art Alandica Shipping Academy (ASA) safety drill centre. Equipped with world-class full-mission ship bridge simulators, marine engine room labs, renewable energy testbeds, and clinical nursing wards, the university conforms to STCW international maritime conventions and EU medical directives. Degrees awarded include the prestigious Bachelor of Maritime Management (Sjökapten YH), Bachelor of Engineering (Ingenjör YH in Sjöfart, Datateknik, and Energiteknik), Bachelor of Business Administration (Tradenom YH), Bachelor of Hospitality Management (Restonom YH), Bachelor of Health Care (Sjukskötare YH), and Master of Engineering.
