About Ewha Womans University
Visit Official WebsiteEwha Womans University (이화여자대학교, EWHA) is a world-renowned private women's research university located in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, South Korea. Founded in May 1886 by American Methodist missionary Mary F. Scranton as Ewha Haktang (梨花學堂), it was granted its name (meaning "Pear Blossom Academy") by Emperor Gojong of the Joseon Dynasty. Holding landmark status as South Korea's first educational institution for women and the first four-year university officially chartered by the post-liberation Korean government in 1945, Ewha is considered one of the largest and most prestigious female institutions of higher education in the world. The institution deliberately retains the historical singular spelling "Womans" to signify that each individual woman is unique and valued. Ewha is celebrated for its trailblazing legal education, medical sciences, interdisciplinary honors college (Scranton College), pharmaceutical sciences, and its iconic subterranean architectural wonder, the Ewha Campus Complex (ECC).
