About Korea Military Academy
Visit Official WebsiteKorea Military Academy (KMA, 육군사관학교) is the premier undergraduate military service academy of the Republic of Korea Army, situated in Gongneung-dong, Nowon-gu, northeastern Seoul. Commonly designated by its historic honorific Hwarangdae (화랑대, 花郞臺)—invoking the ancient Silla kingdom's chivalric Hwarang warrior youth corps—the institution traces its roots to the Military English School (군사영어학교) established in late 1945. It formally opened in May 1946 as the South Joseon Defense Academy before adopting its current name upon the inauguration of the Republic of Korea government in 1948. Reorganized during the Korean War under the guidance of General James A. Van Fleet along the rigorous curricular model of the United States Military Academy at West Point, KMA confers upon all graduates both a Bachelor of Military Art and Science and an accredited civilian Bachelor's degree. It has historically served as the supreme training ground for the command hierarchy of the ROK Armed Forces, national security strategists, defense diplomats, and civic leaders.
