About Royal Conservatory of Liège
The Royal Conservatory of Liège (Conservatoire royal de Liège - CRL) is one of Belgium’s oldest and most illustrious higher institutes of performing arts, founded in 1826 under King William I and officially constituted as a Royal Conservatory in 1831 following Belgian independence. Nestled in the cultural heart of Liège between Rue Forgeur and Boulevard Piercot, CRL operates as an École Supérieure des Arts (ESA) organized and recognized by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles). The institution has cultivated some of Western classical music’s most celebrated figures, intimately tied to the Franco-Belgian violin school through Eugène Ysaÿe and Henri Vieuxtemps, and César Franck, who emerged from its historic studios. Today, CRL combines historic rigor with pioneering contemporary expression through two powerhouse departments: the Department of Music (encompassing classical virtuosity, vocal arts, early music, jazz, and electroacoustic composition) and ESACT (École Supérieure d’Acteurs et d’Actrices), internationally revered as one of Europe’s premier training grounds for contemporary actors, physical theatre directors, and puppetry arts creators.
